The mountains of Abruzzo

The Gran Sasso is one of the most popular destinations for mountain enthusiasts who want to rediscover unspoilt nature and immerse themselves in the deeply rooted traditions of Abruzzo. Noteworthy are also the Monti della Laga, with a sweeter appearance and rich in water sources. In the Abruzzo National Park it is possible to admire the incredible variety of local flora and fauna in a protected and uncontaminated environment.

Civitella del Tronto

The fortress of Civitella del Tronto is one of the most impressive works of military engineering in Italy: it extends, in fact, for more than five hundred meters in length on a rocky ridge. All of its luminous history is linked to the strategic position it has had for a few centuries.

Campli

Campli is situated on a hill between the valleys of the Fiumicino and Siccagno torrents. Rich in architectural monuments that make it a real city of art, Campli is home to a section of the National Archaeological Museum which houses the remains of the Necropolis of Campovalano. The famous Scala Santa, so called because, after 1776 the custom of granting indulgence to those who walked on its knees spread.

Atri

Atri was a city of great prestige in the ancient world, since the 11th and 12th centuries BC It was the only city on the Adriatic coast to coin money before Rome, as well as an important center of trade, thanks to its port on the Adriatic, hence the thesis that the name of the sea itself derives from ancient Hatria. The glorious past of Atri is witnessed by the archaeological finds scattered throughout the surrounding area.

Teramo

The origins of the city of Teramo are very ancient as evidenced by the Roman Theater of 30 BC with the nearby Amphitheater and the ancient Church of Sant'Anna. In the heart of the city is the Cathedral Basilica of 1158 with important works by Abruzzo artists. The Monica Castle, which can be visited only from the outside, dates back to medieval times with its own very characteristic village. Teramo also houses the Archaeological Museum and Municipal Art Gallery in addition to the Astronomical Observatory of Colleurania a few kilometers from the historic center. From a gastronomic point of view the virtues are famous, prepared with seven varieties of dried vegetables, fresh vegetables, pasta and meat served as a traditional dish on May 1st. With the scrippelle instead, tasty soups are prepared such as the scrippelle'mbusse sautéed in a pan and served in chicken broth.

Ascoli Piceno

Ascoli Piceno is a city in the Marche region with a great artistic and architectural heritage. Every year, in summer, the Quintana takes place, an event that consists mainly of two medieval knightly tournaments. The city is also famous for the Ascoli olive, a typical dish of the area.

Gorges of Salinello

Not far from Civitella del Tronto, it is possible to make excursions in the Gole del Salinello. A natural environment that combines history, culture and nature between the two sides of the Twin Mountains: Montagna di Campli and Montagna dei Fiori. The creator of this natural monument was the Salinello Torrent which, acting on the entire mountain, has built over millions of years, a few kilometers long gorge, about 200 meters high and varying in width from not more than five meters to tens of meters, resulting in waterfalls, caves and cavities.

Castelli

At the foot of the Gran Sasso rises Castles, the "city of ceramics" in which the fine art of making this noble material has been handed down from father to son for centuries. Home to famous master potters who served the kings of Naples and the princely houses of Rome, in Castelli you can visit numerous craft shops where you can also make excellent purchases.

Corropoli

In the historic center you can visit the medieval Piazza Piè di Corte with the characteristic fountain. A few kilometers from the center is the Badia di Santa Maria di Mejulano, dating back to the year one thousand.

Gran Sasso National Park

The municipality of Civitella del Tronto is one of the departure stations for naturalistic excursions in the great Gran Sasso and Monti della Laga National Park, characterized by the rich vegetation and the presence of large herbivores such as the Chamois of Abruzzo, the Cervo and the Roe deer, as well as predators like the Lupo, the wild cat, the Faina and the golden eagle.

San Gabriele

Located in the territory of the town of Gran Sasso Island, the sanctuary of San Gabriele, patron saint of Abruzzo, is a very popular religious destination in various occasions during the year. The ancient part of the sanctuary dates back to 1908 and is built in neoclassical style, while the modern part is made in a contemporary style.
